East Coast Rivers Cruising Companion By Janet Harber
Janet Harber, daughter of the original East Coast Rivers Cruising Companion author Jack Coote, has been updating the East Coast Rivers book for 15 years.
Coverage in the 19th edition has been extended south to Ramsgate a major port of call for anyone traversing the Thames estuary. Chapter 19 50 years of East Coast Rivers traces the history of East Coast Pilotage publications back through the century and includes a tantalising connection to the legendary yachtsman and author Erskine Childers, who may even have referred to a 100-year-old pilot guide in his novel, The Riddle of the Sands.
These days the charts are all full-page, colour productions containing enormous detail and the photography is stunning. The pilotage is descriptive and full of local colour including extensive quotations that give a real flavour of the East Coast maritime history and culture.

Verdict: An authoritative update to this East Coast classic with a fascinating chapter on the history of the region
