Smartcom Software Winastro
Taking sights on celestial bodies stars and planets is an ancient art and, with practice, accurate enough. The hardest part, according to Tim Thornton at Smartcom Software, is the tedious and complex sight reduction calculations.
In the event of GPS failure or simply for the pleasure of deriving your position rather than reading it off the screen, Winastro helps you to work out your position. The software lets you plan your sight with a few clicks of the mouse, enter the time and sextant reading and then figures out the line of position.
The latest version includes a stellarium to help recognise the stars, planets and constellations. It is fully MS Vista compatible (as well as with older versions of Windows).

Verdict: Dead reckoning made dead easy - if your GPS goes dead you'll be laughing all the way to the stars - as long as your laptop is still powered.
