Braunton: home of the last sailing coasters By Braunton and District Museum
Braunton (I confess I had to look it up) is tucked into the complex Taw- Torridge estuary, across from its more famous neighbour Bideford, on the North Devon coast.
Its history of ship-owning grew during the 19th century and hung on into the 1950s, sustained by the trading needs of the Bristol Channel area and the local sand and gravel bars which provided regular outbound loads, well after the use of auxiliary ketches for cargo transport had died out elsewhere.
This book, the work of several contributors, chronicles the the fleet which includes some well-kown survivors such as Bessie Ellen and Garlandstone with a huge number of fascinating old photos, and a colour section reproducing pierhead paintings portraits of vessels painted for owners and masters.
Verdict: A local history project at its best full of insight and wider relevance.
