The English-Dutch Sailing Companion By Jan Kramer and Emile Schamp
Sailors heading across the North Sea to cruise Holland could find this translation guide useful, though it has to be said, most Dutchmen speak fluent English, too!
With more than 11,000 entries and 2,700 illustrations, it covers even the most obscure scenarios yachtsmen are likely to encounter: from buying or repairing a new autopilot (stuurauomaat), to a dinghy (bijboot), or winch handle (lierhendel or lierslinger). Translations of food are also provided.
There are some tongue-twisters. From the International Code of Signals, for instance, I require immediate assistance in Dutch is Ik verlang onmiddellijk hulp. The illustrations are a great help. If, for example, you find it difficult to pronounce fan belt in Dutch (drijfriem), just grunt and point at the picture!
Verdict: Heel bruikbaar voor varen in Nederland!
