Ropework, Knots and Splices DVD Presented by Tom Cunliffe
Presented by well-known author and yachtsman Tom Cunliffe, this is a strangely absorbing watch that held my interest for more than two hours. It is far more than just an instructional DVD.
It is something you can learn from, though. For instance, can you really do a sheet bend or a rolling hitch? I admit I used to know, but had long forgotten. I also now know what all those strange-looking coloured ropes at the chandlers are for. The benefits of three-strand over braid line are now abundantly clear to me, and best of all I have put immaculate spliced loops in my mooring lines.
But more than that, the DVD is a reminder of seamanship sometimes forgotten in the world of flybridges and chart plotters. Legendary sea-dog Tom Cunliffe instructs from on board his replica 1911 pilot cutter by his own admission, a forest of ropes. There are parts of the DVD applicable to sailors only, but most skills taught here are transferable to the modern motor yacht. My tip would be to watch the DVD with rope in hand. You may attract a few odd glances from the rest of the family, but youll learn a lot. Toms delivery is personable and at times very funny, in his own downbeat way. Yet the friendly manner is no bar to the serious knowledge imparted. Tom talks, we listen.

Verdict: The splice is right - Tom's ropework DVD is strangely absorbing
