Animated Knots
Knots arent perhaps the most exciting aspect of boating and its probably fair to say that most of us only know and use a limited number. Ill put my hand up at this point and say that, even though I spent many years as a boy scout, doing anything beyond a bowline, clove hitch and round turn and two half hitches requires some research on my behalf. That said, while I have managed to get by for years with these basic knots, I do often wish I could conjure up something impressive, like a carrick bend or a truckers hitch.
I have tried step-by-step books but often the photos seems to miraculously jump from one step to the next with no obvious route. Animated Knots is a computer programme available to buy on CD or as a download from its website.
Once you have chosen your knot you are provided with a series of very clear images that can be viewed one by one, or animated either fast or slowly to show how the knot is tied. Each page also provides information on the knots uses, their limitations and any safety concerns.
As well as a section on boating knots, there are other sections on climbing, fishing, search and rescue, household and decorative knots, plus helpful animated procedures for whipping and splicing.

Verdict: Animated knots is a fun programme that helps you get the most out of your ropework.
