This course introduces you to marine terminology, seamanship, safety, collision regulations, meteorology, chartwork, tides, coastal navigation and pilotage.
It leads to the award of the RYA Day Skipper shorebased completion certificate. This is the level of theoretical knowledge that youll need for the RYA Day Skipper practical course (sail and motor), the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) and the RYA Intermediate Powerboat course.
No prior knowledge is required
Our study material is built on that assumption although you will find it easier to relate theory to reality if you have some practical experience.

This is an advanced course and you will need some prior theoretical knowledge (roughly Day Skipper or equivalent) to take it. The chartwork is more advanced, the collision regulations are fully covered and meteorology is a major part of the syllabus.
It leads to the award of the RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased completion certificate. This is the theory foundation youll need as you progress towards the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore practical qualifications.
Some prior knowledge is required If you have the Day Skipper certificate (or an equivalent level of knowledge) then this is the right course for you. It shouldnt matter if you are fairly rusty because our course includes a lot of Day Skipper level revision material.
You will find the course extremely challenging if you cannot read a chart and carry out basic plotting and tidal calculations. If you are a complete beginner then this is unlikely to be the right course for you.

This very interesting advanced course leads to the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean shorebased certificate and covers astro navigation, worldwide meteorology and ocean level passage planning. It also negates the need for a written test when you go for your exam.
Level of knowledge required
You must have a good knowledge of chartwork and meteorology up to RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore level and this is assumed in our study material. You do not need any prior knowledge of astro navigation.
